Oldrich Svec, author of FARR plugins and member of donationcoder joins us for an interview.
Q. Hello, Please introduce yourself and share some facts about yourself.
My name is Oldrich Svec, I am from the Czech Republic, I study at Czech Technical University branch Civil Engineering, where I am focused on Structural Mechanics. I have had a girlfriend already for 5 years, we live together in an appartment. And we have got a dog.
Q. How’d you get started with computers and build up your skill set?
My first experience with computers was already at primary school as my
parent bought me PC486 30Mhz,1MB ram or similar. When I was 14 years
old I began playing with Pascal and at high school I focused on CSS, HTML, PHP. Programming has been flowing through my life all the time but always it was kind of free time relaxation for me. So I have never studied computer science.
Q. Which is your favourite programming language? Which tool you use for creating apps?
My favourite programming language is JavaScript as it is simple and straightforward. For scientific programming I mainly use Matlab and
for free time coding I use Netbeans.
Q. How and when did you get involved in Donationcoder ?
Well it has already been more than 1 year since my first touch of donationcoder. If I remember well I was searching for Launchy alternative and google pointed me to Donationcoder. Luckily in that time ecaradec made his great Fscript plug-in and so it all began 😉
Q. How much time do you usually spend on computers/programming?
On computer quite a lot. More than I would wish. The reason is that everything is done using pc nowadays. Even structural mechanics is a matter of computer simulations nowadays. Programming I do in my free
time which is usually every second day. Sometimes I do programming
whole day and then I have a few days off 😉
Q. How you keep balance of your creativity, work, coding projects with social life or personal life?
Well I try to do part of each. I do not want to spend my whole life connected to pc ;). And a good medicine for that is a girlfriend. So if you feel like you spend to much time on pc get yourself one 🙂
Q. Do you have any experience with operating system other than windows ?How much you get involved in it?
I have tried Linux once. I think it was Ubuntu. But my printer (Lexmark x1190) did not work there, Allplan (Autocad alternative) did not work there, Scia ESA (statics) did not work there, FARR did not work there!!!! so I quickly switched back to Windows XP.
Q. What are your hobbies and interests away from the desk?
I love soft tennis and I play it every week, I also go swimming every week and when the weather is fine I go cycling or roller-skating. We (I, my girlfriend and other friends) also play quite a lot of modern desk games. In the winter season we go to quite a lot of balls which I like as well 😉
Q. Who or what in your life would you say influenced you most?
Hm.. difficult question. I would say, that my one year stay in Denmark at Resjby Europaeiske Efterskole influenced me significantly as I would like to go back to Denmark for Phd. studies 😉 And of course my girlfriend completely changed my life but that is usual I guess.
Q. Your favourite stuff from : Food/T.V.Show/Website/Books/Music/Movie ?
Food: – I eat nearly everything but smelly cheese which I hate. So I
have quite a lot of favourite food but If I am to mention one I say
rice. I really love rice 😉 Pity I was not born in Vietnam, China etc
🙂
Q. Any advice you’d give to new programmers?
Do not be afraid of programming. It is fun!
Q. Where do you see yourself in future?
In Denmark probably? I want to continue at DTU so probably there. But
who knows where I will be in reality 🙂
[M] Thanks for Interview Oldrich. 🙂
